Ask Me About: STDs

STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). The most common diseases include Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Herpes, and Human Immunodefieciency Virus (HIV)

If you've had unprotected sex you should get tested, have a new partner, or worried that you might have been exposed to an STD. A healthy practice is to get tested at least once a year.

Get tested if you experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Rectal Pain
  • Rectal Discharge
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Green, yellow or white discharge from penis
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Pain and swelling in testicles

Knowing your STD status is a key step in stopping STD transmission. Many STDs can be easily diagnosed and treated. If either you, or your partner, is infected then both of you will need to receive treatment at the same time to reduce the chance of reinfection.

  • Get tested and treated for STDs and encourage your partners to do the same.
  • Choose less risky sexual behaviors. Oral sex, mutual masturbation are less risky than anal or vaginal sex
  • Use condoms properly and consistently.
  • If your partner is infected, encourage your partner to get and stay on treatment.
